Things I want to do with my daughter…when she comes into this world!

by Courtney on March 3, 2011

A couple days ago I found out I’m having a baby girl in approximately 19 weeks from now (if I’m full term), and though I was excited for the news, it hadn’t really sunk in yet. It didn’t seem real! But I’m really enjoying saying “she” when I talk about the baby and for the last two days my husband has called and asked me “How are my girls?” followed by him saying, “I love saying that. But I’m still mourning my boy for the rest of the week!” Ha! Ok, that’s fine – mourn for three more days – but I’ve got my girl!! Anyway, I’ve been thinking about all the things I’d like to do with a little girl and the things I’d like to teach her, so I wanted to share those here in a blog post. You know, in case I forget later… *pregnancy brain*

I’m hoping that being a mom to a girl comes naturally to me as I remember very much how I felt in different stages of my life, from as young as 3 years old, to being a chubby 4th grader, to an insecure high school student, to now. I’ll be sure to give her oodles of TLC from the moment I meet her so she feels loved and safe and secure from her earliest memory. This is what my parents did for me and I can’t tell you how important it is. So now that I got that out of the way, some of the fun stuff…!

Mommy and daughter afternoon pampering! I can’t wait to have a little shopping buddy! I’m definitely a shopper and love fashion, but I’ll probably be wearing rags for the next few years as I spend all my shopping money on adorable little baby girl clothes! I mean, every time I stepped into Baby Gap before I was ever pregnant I felt my ovaries react! So now….game on! And how cute are toddler girls with little tiny pink nails??? TOO-CUTE-FOR-WORDS, right?! Love it – can’t wait for it!

Support her skillz! When I was a kid I was such a little artist. I sat around for hours and hours drawing pictures of little people. I definitely got this talent from my dad and he made sure to spend time with me helping me perfect my drawing skills so I knew the proper contours of a human body and the importance of shading and adding the little details that makes someone look real and not cartoonish. So whatever my daughter’s skills or interests are, I want to encourage her and help her excel in these areas however I can.

Play Barbies with her! I loved, loved, LOVED playing Barbies when I was a kid. Like drawing, I’d play in my room for hours dressing them and making them talk and rearranging their furniture in their Barbie house (that my dad built!). I must’ve been such a good kid for my parents because I’d get lost in my own world with these interests and I wouldn’t make a peep for days! (Ok, maybe not days!) I can’t wait to buy my daughter her first Barbie!

Live vicariously through her sorority days! Ok, so she may not choose to be in a sorority, but my friend texted me the other day and asked me if I was excited to have a Delta Zeta Legacy now! Well, I can’t say that I’d thought about that yet, but sure, it’ll be pretty fun to watch her go through rush and pick which house is the right fit for her. And as cool as it would be for her to be a Delta Zeta like her mom, I’d be thrilled for her to choose her own path too!

Someone to share my Twilight love! I actually haven’t mentioned my Twilight love in a long time on this blog, but it’s still ever present! Am I gonna have a little Team Edward or Team Jacob lovah when she’s old enough to pick?! Don’t think I’m not dragging her four month old butt to the midnight showing of “Breaking Dawn” in November – HA! I recently discovered the website Twi-baby, so yes, my girl will be rockin her Team Edward lurv (I’ll pick her team for now!).

Wedding planning! I had so much fun planning my wedding with my mom, who was basically my wedding planner, and I so look forward to helping with the planning for my little one’s big day someday – very, very far in the future! Just think…picking out the dress! Watching Jeff walk her down the aisle and dance the father-daughter dance with her…ahh this is making me get weepy already!!

There are tons of things I’m leaving out but for now these are the things that come top of mind. I can’t wait for all the frilly stuff but really, I just can’t wait to hold her and for her to look up to me like I looked up to my mom. I want to be the best example and the best mom she can have and I’m SO excited to meet her!
